Beth & Matt – “A Question for You”
Beth almost didn’t go to the charity quiz night at her old sixth form. A friend needed moral support, so she showed up. Matthew didn’t go to the school at all, he was there to perform. Beth spotted what she thought was a speaker on stage with some guy sitting on it. Then he started playing it, and she realised it was a cajón drum.
She couldn’t help herself. Beth started copying his hand movements on her table. Matthew watched from the stage, laughing. Embarrassed but bold, she walked up afterwards: “I’m better on that than you!” She added him on Facebook that night. She made the first move.
They met in December 2011 and got together on 23rd February 2012. Matt had a gig that night and told himself he had “a question for her” after. The gig overran. Beth waited. He finally came round and asked her out officially, under the judgemental gaze of a cat.
Fourteen years later, that same phrase came back around.
They were childhood sweethearts who never really talked about marriage. They just kept choosing each other, through three years of long distance studying abroad, through buying a house, through building a quiet life togethe
Then came a last-minute trip to Majorca. Matthew found the Torre Del Verger watchtower on a morning run, deserted and perfect. He brought Beth back, asked for a photo with the sea behind them. While she stood admiring the view, he set up his phone to record and pulled a ring from his bag.
“I’ve got a question for you,” he said, the same words he always said. “Yes,” Beth replied without turning around. She hadn’t let him ask. When she turned, he was on one knee. “What the **** … is this real?! Yes, by the way.” Twelve and a half years in the making, answered before it was even asked.
From a cajón beat in a school hall to a watchtower proposal above the Mediterranean, their rhythm has never fallen out of time.
